The third edition of the critically acclaimed USA in Space covers both new missions and corrections to and expansions upon previous ones. The scope of space exploration history has been extended at both ends: On the history of rocket science, as well as the latest missions. Space Shuttle Mission STS-107 (2003), in which seven astronauts tragically lost their lives aboard the orbiter Columbia is covered. Plus there is candid discussion of the institutional conditions that contributed to the accident as well as consideration of the direction in which space exploration is headed. The latest essay covers the return to space, Space Shuttle Mission STS-114, in August of 2005. Book News Annotation: This third edition three-volume set subsumes the previous edition
(2001), offering 280 essays (42 are new; five are replaced), all of
them brought carefully up to date. Although the title does not
reflect the trend, space exploration has become increasingly
international, and missions launched by other nations are also
covered. Each signed entry--ranging in length from 2,000 to 5,000
words--thoroughly explains the details of a mission in a consistent
format beginning with ready-reference top matter (purpose, key
figures, and a brief summary). Following is narrative describing the
program, what was learned, and its social, political, economic, and
scientific context. Entries are alphabetically arranged and include
cross references across the three volumes and extensive reading
lists. This third edition features expanded coverage of the history
of rocket science and inclusion of the latest missions as well as
some that are planned but not yet launched. Discussion of the
Columbia disaster includes consideration of institutional causes and
deliberation on directions for space exploration. The reference has
been enhanced with expanded appendices (chronology, key figures,
glossary, space shuttle missions, web pages) and new images (450 b&w
photos).
