Throughout this century, Soviet scientists had strongly influenced Western research on the origin of the solar system. Now this volume offers a comprehensive overview of Soviet research in planetary cosmogony from the last eight decades. It opens with a selection of the seminal papers of Otto Schmidt, some of which were never published in English. The book also includes a compendium of articles illuminating such topics as the protoplanetary cloud, the formation of the Earth and other terrestrial planets, the origin of the moon, as well as asteriods, comets, and meteorites. Book News Annotation:
A collection that begins with essays from each of the editors, the
first placing Soviet solar system research in its historical context,
and the next describing the state of Western planetary cosmogony as
the Soviet work was being introduced. Then follows a selection of
Otto Schmidt's seminal writings, including some articles published in
English for the first time. The remainder of the volume is a
compendium of articles and abstracts spanning the time period from
the early 1950s to 1991, arranged chronologically within the
categories of theories of planet formation, rotation of the planets,
formation of the Earth and other terrestrial planets, origin of the
moon and other planetary satellites, formation of the giant planets,
other planetary systems, and asteroids, comets, and meteorites.
