With the publication of this English translation of the great French
mathematician-scientist Poincare (1854-1912), the History of Modern
Physics series has been expanded to include astronomy. The
translation is a newly typeset and extensive revision, correction,
and updating of the 1967 NASA English translation of Les Methodes
Nouvelles de la Mecanique Celeste, originally published in 1892-1899.
The three volumes are subtitled respectively Periodic and Asymptotic
Solutions (114-8), Approximations by Series (115-6), and Integral
Invariants and Asymptotic Properties of Certain Solutions (116-4).
The technical endnotes accompanying this edition are translated from
the Russian edition of Poincare's Collected Works, volumes I and II
(Nauka, 1971 and 1973). Edited with an extensive (107pp.)
introduction by Daniel L. Goroff (Harvard U.).
